The product combo of yarn swift + yarn ball winder was a really good price and shipping was fast and it was packaged nicely. Have used both several times now and love it! The swift doesn’t squeak like other swifts do and the winder has a low hum to it and definitely not as noisy as my Boye Electric Winder. Though the swift does have grip pads on the bottoms to prevent it from sliding off the table, I have been using it on a folding TV tray and it still slides off a little bit and with such a small table, you really need to keep an eye on it especially if you are going to be winding yarn for awhile. It would probably work better on the dining table but my craft room is on the second floor and I didn’t want to lug everything down. I got the Amish style swift due to the smaller footprint when storing as the box is really thin like maybe less than an inch thick. The swift is very well made and very smooth and did not snag any type of yarn at all. Really love it though I often wonder how I would fare with the umbrella type swift. The winder is mostly made of plastic with metal parts but it feels very sturdy and very well made. I’ve used different yarn fibers and it hasn’t snagged any as the mechanism is well covered. The crank handle is very smooth to turn and clamping it on and off a table is easy. Right now, I have it clamped onto a corner of another folding TV tray and it works fine and stays put. Love it! It’s not my permanent spot for it because winding yarn on a flimsy TV tray will rock the tray like crazy. I just need to get a sturdier craft table or figure out a way to clamp it on a corner of my desk without it getting in the way of my work laptop and other stuff. Like the swift, it will probably work best on a sturdy table like a dining table. I do wish that I have the option to try the umbrella swift in this combo and then send back one of the swifts that didn’t fit the user’s needs so that the customer has a better idea of what works better for them instead of having to buy both types of swift or continually wondering if the other type will work better or not. If you are in the market for both a swift and winder, you can’t go wrong with any of their combos.
I purchased this after glowing comments I saw on the Knitters' Paradise blog. Performanc
I'm a new crocheter and had never used any kind of yarn swift or ball winder before, and I didn't have any trouble at all using these. Well, I had a little trouble because I clipped it to a table edge that wasn't deep enough, but that's not the ball winder's fault. I got a third hand from my husband to guide the yarn so I could hold the winder still while I cranked it, and all was well. I'm crocheting from my yarn cake now and I must say it is the easiest yarn configuration to crochet from I've tried yet.
I like that the swift has indications of what circumference of hank will fit at each peg distance. After measuring my hank, I positioned the pegs well on the first try. It's easy to put together, easy to use, and easy to pack back into its box to store away. I did put a rubber band around the pegs to reduce the chance of one getting lost.
After using a nostepinne to wind hanks of yarn by hand, I decided to purchase a ball winder and swift. I had seen recommendations for Stanwood models, and after reading numerous reviews I purchased the Tabletop Amish Style Yarn Swift / Ball Winder YBW-A Combination #3. Both items assemble easily and work smoothly. I am especially pleased with the ball winder. These products live up to the Stanwood reputation and are reasonably priced.
Much simpler than the umbrella style swift - works very well and was very happy with being able to get these as a set.
I have recently purchased an amish style swift and yarn ball winder. I am so impressed with the ease of use, quality of construction and quality of the yarn cakes i have been winding! these are wonderful products, and I highly recommend them
I love both of these! The swift is easy to assemble and take apart for storage. It is sturdy enough to handle fast winding. The ball winder works like a charm! Highly recommended!
Absolutely one of my very favorite online purchases. I chose the Amish style swift because storage is compact (just a flat box). That, combined with the Ball Wider is an awesome combination. Well worth every cent! Thank you for a well made and efficient tool.
